When we remove your braces, we will begin the retention stage of your treatment. Your final orthodontic result depends on your retainers, so follow through with the hard work you’ve put in so far. Our orthodontist, Dr. Michelle Wulf, will give you instructions on how to wear and care for your retainer. It is your responsibility to preserve your treatment results by wearing your retainers as instructed to you.
Here are few things to keep in mind:
- Always wear your retainers as instructed.
- Bring your retainers to every orthodontic appointment.
- Try your retainers on after every dental appointment to make sure they fit if you have had any new restorations, fillings or crowns done.
- Always place your retainers in the box given to you if they are not in your mouth so you can keep them safe. Do not put them in a napkin or tissue paper as they may get thrown out or distorted. Keep it away from pets as well.
Please call us if you have any problems with your retainers as soon as possible. Some slight shifting is normal. Please be aware that there will be a fee for future office visits and there may be a fee for repair if a retainer is lost or damaged. (The fee will vary according to the type of service required). If you have questions about your retainer in Council Bluffs, Iowa, call Southwest Orthodontics at 712-323-7589 today.
The clear retainer is removable and covers all of the teeth in three dimensions (clear retainers look much like Invisalign® trays). It is made of a specialized/durable plastic which is fabricated to perfectly fit your teeth. Patients often comment on superior comfort and aesthetics this retainer provides. If desired, the clear retainer can also be used for teeth whitening. They should be cleaned daily with a toothbrush and water or a denture cleaner. These retainers should not be placed in hot or boiling water or be exposed to excess heat if so the retainer will become distorted and no longer fit properly. As long as you wear it as instructed it will fit and retain your teeth excellently.
Hawley retainers are removable retainers. During the retention phase of treatment, we may make minor adjustments to your Hawley retainer in order to maintain good alignment of your teeth. They should be handled with care as they are fragile and costly to replace. The retainers should be placed in the case that is given to you when they are not worn. They should be cleaned daily with a toothbrush and water sometimes a denture cleaner or retainer cleaner may be necessary.
